James Clear aimed to start flossing, but he never successfully incorporated it into his routine. Regardless of his good intentions, the dental floss remained unused in a drawer in his bathroom.
Fortunately, James had gained insights into human behavior and the process of forming habits. As a writer focused on self-improvement, he dedicated significant time to studying scientific research on behavior change. He chose to implement some of these ideas in his own efforts.
First, he put the floss on the bathroom counter instead of hiding it away in a drawer, making it more noticeable.
Secondly, he recognized that he disliked the feeling of wrapping floss around his fingers, so he switched to using floss picks, making the experience more pleasant.
Lastly, he decided to floss right after brushing his teeth. He utilized a method known as “habit stacking,” where a new habit is more likely to be established if it is linked or triggered by an already established habit, like tooth brushing.
Through these strategies, James successfully developed a flossing habit. He discusses these methods and more in the latest podcast episode.
